MULTI GRAIN : SOME MYTH

Be Label Smart
Today the market is buzzing with multigrain products of all types from biscuits, and snacks, to dosa, noodles, bread etc. But does multigrain really live up to its hype? The atta contains five grains apart from wheat, and is termed healthy. So I naturally assumed the term multigrain as being healthy for my family.
Multigrain Definition
A food containing more than one grain is termed multigrain. So a multigrain signifies that the product often contain grains like oats, ragi, maize, wheat, soya etc. So you get the goodness of all these grains in your food, right?
This is where we have a bit of thinking to do as we will soon discover.
Multigrain Misconception

If you are equating the term multigrain with whole grains and health then you could be in a bit of trouble. Whole grains mean that all parts of the grain and its kernel (germ, bran and endosperm) are used. This is a healthy option, as the complete grain product is used which is loaded with fiber and nutrients. The outer part, which is the bran, contains B vitamins and fiber, while the the germ is loaded with proteins and antioxidants, and the endosperm contains starch and gluten. But multigrain does not necessarily mean whole grain. A multigrain product can contain processed or refined flour, in which case the goodness of wholegrain will be absent in the product. The process of refining can take away the bran; leach away the fatty acids from germ, leaving only the endosperm which is less in nutrients. So though multigrain contains more than one grain, it may not signify the usage of whole grains.

Check Labels
Labels can give you a fair idea as to what the product contains. Labels help you understand the list of ingredients present in the product, and also help you understand their percentage. So many multigrain products can:Be refined products with Maida, or wheat flour usage, but with a bit of multigrain in it. In this case you are consuming processed products, which are de-husked, and have lost most of its nutrients like fiber, vitamins and phytonutrients.Or they may contain very less percentage of grains like ragi-2%, rice-2%, etc, and the mention of a generic term ‘flour’ with no mention of whether it is wholegrain at all.The product could be enriched or fortified. This means when the grain is polished, and refined certain nutrients get lost. So the product is then enriched with essential minerals, calcium, etc to substitute the lost nutrients. Due to addition of minerals the product is slightly more nutritious, compared to its refined counterpart.
Some breads or whole grain products will also have a Whole Grain Council stamp, which makes it easier for you to identify whether it is whole grain or a de-husked variety. Don’t go by the looks of the product, as some manufacturers can fool the consumers by adding food additives, malt and coloring, to make it look like whole grain. So always check the label for terms like ‘enriched’, ‘wholegrain’, the ingredients and their percentages. If the multigrain product contains at least 30% of the whole grain, it is better than any refined product.
When Using Multigrain Products At Home, Be Aware

Some products may have a high content of fat along with fiber content. So check out for your cholesterol levels, while consuming such products. An adult should consume at least 28grams of whole grains in his/her diet. Some of the good sources of grains are brown rice, maize, ragi, or rolled oats, which are better for the body in the long run.Check out if you have wheat intolerance, or allergies, when using multigrain products.Multigrain products, which contain whole grains, and fewer chemicals, are less likely to remain fresh after a few days. Multigrain breads come in this category and they can encounter dryness very soon.
Bottom Line:

A multigrain product with whole grain products can protect you against a host of diseases like heart, cancer and diabetes. They are also rich in vitamins and nutrients. Being loaded with fiber they are digested slowly and less amount of the food is converted in to fat. Just be label smart when choosing multigrain products.

Short Cut To Health: Is there any ?

Short Cut To Health: Is there any ?

One week back at our center one of my friends son came with her for Nutritional Advice. The boy is extremely intelligent, passed his 10th class with flying colors (98%) and was about to join some International university for further studies with scholarships. The main problem was health. To be very frank when I saw the little kid I felt really bad for him. He is 180 cm with 192 kg. His Sugar level, Uric acid levels and B.P. was extremely high. No stamina and very lower Immunity.

Just imagine a bright Kid of our society at the age of 16 was dealing with all these problems. These were just Lifestyle generated and can be corrected if right steps are taken at right time. When I counsel them about the complications of these problems in his later life they were concerned but their response was give him some pills to reduce his weight immediately. Following a diet and exercise regime is not possible for him as he is very busy and he cannot leave junk food. The response was of Mother not the child …XXX, YYY, ZZZ product available in the market can Reduce 10 kg weight in one month. Don’t you have those pills?

Think wisely is it possible that any Product can have drastic reduction in weight without having any Side effect. If that was possible then that person would have got Noble prize. In today’s life everyone wants a shortcut to health. Is it possible that there is any short Cut to health? Or we can be healthy just with pills without proper diet, Exercise or healthy lifestyle. No Impossible. Become a Smart consumer. Before using any product check the ingredients on net and know the side effects. Its your body and you have to live in it for your whole life. Don’t abuse it.

As a parent we bear a huge responsibility for our kids. We can’t blame younger generation regarding the bad food habits. The first school of learning is our home. And a Mother plays the most important role in making the eating habits of the child. Take little care in the formative years and we can prevent a lot of problems and ensure their healthy life.

Morbid Obesity

UNDERSTANDING SEVERE (MORBID) OBESITY

Morbid obesity is characterized by an individual weighing more than 40 kilograms (100 pounds) over their ideal body weight, or having a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher.

Throughout this site, the term “morbidly obese” is used to define an individual weighing more than 40 kg over their ideal body weight. Mass media and the public sometimes refer to morbid obesity using the term “severely obese.” These two terms may be used interchangeably.
What is the difference between obesity and morbid obesity?

Obesity is a serious health epidemic. About 30 million Indians are obese. Obesity is a disease characterized by excessive body fat or by having a BMI greater than 30. Morbid obesity is characterized by an individual having a BMI greater than 40. In addition, it also includes people with a BMI of more than 35 and associated weight related co-morbid conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease and many more.

Measuring Morbid Obesity

Morbid obesity is most commonly calculated using BMI. BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by his or her height in square meters. Patients with a BMI of 40 or higher are classified as morbidly obese.

BMI is not used to determine a person’s actual percentage of body fat, but it is a good indicator to categorize weight in terms of what is healthy and unhealthy.

What are the risks associated with morbid obesity?

Many co-morbidities accompany morbid obesity. Once a patient is considered morbidly obese, these conditions become serious health risks. These co-morbidities also negatively impact the quality of life for a patient and their family members affected by morbid obesity.

The most prevalent morbid obesity-related diseases include:
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
  • Some cancers (endometrial, breast and colon)
  • Liver disease
  • Venous disease
  • Acid reflux
  • Menstrual irregularities and infertility

Those who are affected by morbid obesity are encouraged to talk with their physician concerning the co-morbidities listed. The earlier these are detected, the better advantage a patient may have to keep them under control with the assistance of a physician.
[top]
Causes of Morbid Obesity

Morbid obesity is simply not a result of overeating. It is a serious disease that needs to be prevented and treated. The causes of morbid obesity are widespread, but target three main contributors: behavior, environment and genetics.

Behavior

In today’s fast-paced environment, it is easy to adopt unhealthy behaviors. Behavior, in the case of morbid obesity, relates to food choices, amount of physical activity you get and the effort to maintain your health.

The increase in caloric intake has also decreased the nutrients consumed that are needed for a healthy diet. This behavioral problem also relates to the increase in portion sizes at home and when dining out.

The influence of television, computers and other technologies discourage physical activity and add to the problem of obesity in our society.

Environment

Environment plays a key role in shaping an individual’s habits and lifestyle. There are many environmental influences that can impact your health decisions. Today’s society has developed a more sedentary lifestyle. Walking has been replaced by driving cars, physical activity has been replaced by technology and nutrition has been overcome by convenience foods.

Genetics

Science shows that genetics play a role in obesity and morbid obesity. Genes can cause certain disorders which result in obesity. However, not all individuals who are predisposed to obesity become morbidly obese. Research is currently underway to determine which genes contribute most to morbid obesity.

What are the social effects of morbid obesity?

Individuals affected by morbid obesity often face obstacles far beyond health risks. Emotional suffering may be one of the most painful parts of morbid obesity. Society often emphasizes the importance of physical appearance. As a result, people who are morbidly obese often face prejudice or discrimination.

Effects at Work

Due to the negative stigma associated with morbid obesity, morbidly obese employees are often viewed as less competent, lazy and lacking in self-discipline by their co-workers and employers. Often times, discriminatory attitudes can negatively impact wages, promotions and employment status for obese employees.

In Healthcare Settings

Negative attitudes about morbidly obese patients also exist in the healthcare setting. Morbidly obese patients that are often reluctant to seek medical care may be more likely to delay important preventative healthcare services and may more frequently cancel medical appointments. Delaying medical attention can lead to delayed discovery or treatment of co-morbid conditions, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, while becoming more physically damaging.

The consequences of discrimination against the morbidly obese can seriously impact an individual’s quality of life and only further intensify the negative stigma associated with obesity.

Treating Morbid Obesity

(*Note: Please consult with your physician before beginning any treatment program.)
Because the health risks associated with morbid obesity are life-threatening, clinical programs, such as medically managed weight-loss, weight-loss surgery and other options are available for treatment.

Medically Managed Weight-Loss

Medically managed weight-loss programs provide treatment in a clinical setting with a licensed healthcare professional, such as a medical doctor, nurse, registered dietitian and/or psychologists. These programs typically offer services such as nutrition education, physical activity and behavioral therapy. Often, these programs incorporate total meal replacement programs.

Medications (Pharmacotherapy)
All are to be used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet, exercise and behavior modification. As with all therapies, medically managed weight-loss needs to be approached with a focused treatment plan, which includes a team of healthcare providers. The team should include dietitians, psychologists and exercise specialists, in addition to the medical providers to provide care at all stages of the weight-loss treatment process.

Bariatric Surgery (Weight-loss Surgery)

If your BMI is more than 40, or your BMI is more than 35 and you have a weight-related co-morbidity, such as diabetes or hypertension, you may consider bariatric surgery (also called weight-loss surgery). It is important to speak with your surgeon to determine if surgery is right for you.

Today, the three most commonly selected procedures for weight-loss surgery are:
  • Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
  • Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding
  • Gastric Sleeve Resection

When considering weight-loss surgery, you must balance the personal risk of being morbidly obese with the potential risk of the surgery. This treatment option is a tool that you will continually use to lose weight. Surgery is a resource to help you reduce your weight. Behavioral, physical and psychological changes are required for you to maintain a healthy quality of life. Continued positive weight-loss relies upon your desire and dedication to change your lifestyle with a proactive approach.

Additional Treatment Options
In addition to weight-loss surgery and medically managed weight-loss, the following therapies are also utilized to treat morbid obesity.

Behavior Modification

Behavior plays a significant role in morbid obesity. Modifying behaviors that have contributed to developing obesity is one way to treat the disease either alone or in conjunction with other treatments. A few suggested behavior modifiers include: changing eating habits, increasing physical activity, becoming educated about the body and how to nourish it appropriately, engaging in a support group or extracurricular activity and setting realistic weight management goals.

Physical Activity
Increasing or initiating a physical activity program is an important aspect in managing morbid obesity. Routine physical activity can greatly impact your health. Set realistic goals and make sure to consult with your physician before initiating any exercise program.

WHAT IS DNA DIET ??? IS IT USEFUL????

Dieting is often an endless cycle of losing weight and gaining it all back. Thousands of diets exist, but how do you know which one is best for you? The answer may lie in your DNA.

The idea of the DNA diet is rooted in the scientifically proven reality that dieting simply doesn't work for many people. According to studies, 95% of people will gain back the weight they lose within a few years, and 41% of those who attempt dieting will eventually gain back more weight than they lost.

A now famous study conducted at Stanford University looked at the long-term effects of weight loss using a few different diets assigned at random. Results showed that some participants lost weight on one type of diet, such as low-fat, while others did not. The study then tested participants' DNA for 3 specific gene variations and found that those using the best diet for their DNA lost as much as 2 1/2 times more weight than those not using their best DNA diet.

"This genetic testing is a brand new field, nutrigenomics, the link between genes and nutrition," says David Katz, MD, nutrition expert and founder of the Yale Prevention Center. "It makes sense because our genes control hormone levels, enzyme levels - all the basic levels of metabolism. And how we metabolize food determines what happens to the nutrients and calories we take in."
First Time in Lucknow Nutrigenetic screening

Until now your diet ,Weight Loss , Nutrition and Exercise were based on a one size -fits all approach.

Boost your immunity this winter

Sniffles and Cold don't have to be part and parcel of this season. You can keep them away by eating right. Beat the winter blues by adequately nourishing your body with the nutrients that it requires to combat the cold. Below is a list of foods that can help boost immunity and keep you warm and happy.

  • Fish : Vitamin D, found in especially high levels in fish, can help relieve mood disorders by increasing the amount of serotonin - one of the neurotransmitters responsible for the 'feel good factor' - in the brain. According to a study by the Department of Medicine, Alzheimer's Disease Research Centre, St Louis, low levels of Vitamin D were associated with poor moods and the inability to complete certain mental tests. Oily fish such as sardines, mackerel and salmon are a good choice.

  • Eggs : Eggs are rich in phospholipids that help keep the brain sharp as well as enhance our memory.

  • Oranges & Spinach are commonly linked to Vitamin C, but they are also high in folate. Folate is said to play an important role in enhancing moods and, like Vitamin B12, it helps in the creation of serotonin.

  • Nuts and Seeds : Most nuts contain selenium, which helps in preventing depression and is vital for good mental health. Having 4 almonds and 2 walnuts a day can help keep the blues away.
  • \
  • Veggies - best eaten slightly crunchy Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, mustard greens, spinach and fenugreek leaves are a potent source of beta-carotene, vitamins C, E, folate and calcium. Orange and yellow coloured veggies such as pumpkin and squash are rich in carotenoids and Vitamin A - both powerful anti-oxidants. In a Boston University School of Medicine study, researchers observed that pregnant women who consume at least seven servings (80 g per serving) of fruits and vegetables per day reduce the risk of developing an upper respiratory tract infection.

  • Mushrooms such as shiitake, maitake, and reishi contain polysaccharides, sterols, vitamins, minerals and amino acids that increase your immune function. Mushrooms are rich in zinc which has anti-oxidant and immunity boosting properties.

  • Wholegrains : Wholewheat, oats, quinoa, rye, jowar, bajra and brown rice are rich in B vitamins, zinc and selenium, which look after our immune system. Their fiber content keeps our intestines healthy, often considered the first line of defence against illness.

  • Spices : Onions, garlic, ginger, turmeric, oregano are anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory. They are also rich in anti-oxidants and can help ward off and fight infections. Ginger, for instance, is an excellent tonic for sore throats.

  • Yogurt : It may not seem like the ideal winter food, but yogurt helps to maintain the right balance of flora in the gut. The friendly bacteria in our gut help prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria and candida, keeping infections at bay. They are also vital for optimal digestion.

  •   Winter is the season for keeping your immune system ticking as well as providing the brain with 'feel good' chemicals. Keep the winter at bay by eating healthy and exercising regularly.

Malnutrition in Children : High alert for Parents, Nutriwell's study

Malnutrition in Children : High alert for Parents

    Is your child
    ·         Underweight /Overweight,
    ·         Lacks concentration,
    ·         Weak in studies ,
    ·         Takes time to respond ,
    ·         Low level of immunity and stamina,
    ·         Problem coping up with studies.

It may be a case of Malnutrition.” A new study based on a survey of the height and weight of more than one lakh children across six States has found that as many as 42 per cent of under-fives are severely or moderately underweight” . Source: The Hindu 10th Jan 2012.

Now days we are seeing Aamir Khan advocating Malnutrition program in India. The actor has been roped in by the ministry of women and child development to be the face of the movement over the next one year. Opposite to usual belief Malnutrition is found in rich and middle class families also.Contact dietician in lucknow for details

There are two reasons for Malnutrition in middle and high class families –
    1. Imbalanced diet
    2. Ignorance of wrong food habits in children by parents.

It is also found that some parents are totally unaware of what a balanced diet should consist of. They don’t know the importance of balanced diet. They only care that their children eat adequate diet.
If child wants to eat chips, samosas, maggi, chowmin, pastries, their parents do not resist. Parents themselves also eat junk food and allow their children also.Contact dietician in lucknow for details

    Suggestions for preventions
